The good Doctor suggest that you check the following prior to departure!
- Steering Wheel tight
- Steering chain and master link
- Look for burrs in the cables
- All turning blocks are secure, free wheeling, and lubed
- Inspect the cable where attaches to the Quadrant
- Quadant or tiller bolts are tight
- Is the key on the quadant or tiller secure
- Is the rudder glad keeping the ocean out of your boat
- Hydraulic cylinder bolts and clevis tight
- Does your rudder stop system work
- Have you tried to ship your emergency tiller lately and where is that emergtiller
- Pretest autopilot in many sea conditions in local waters
- Inspect all possible control line chaffing sites
- Autopilot bolts secure
- Wind vane connecting bolts secure, in the event that you need to ship a
new rudder with your body tangled in the vane during a force 9 blow
Dr. Steering suggests the following part prescription to take along with you:
- Steering chain
- Master link
- Additional steering cable
- Bulldog clamps
- Hydraulic oil to be stored near the pump
- Additional hydraulic hoses
- Multiple wind vane paddles
- Multiple vane light and heavy air paddles
- Low stretch UV protected line for vane steering control lines
